Pie with Crumbled Apples and Tallow

Christie Vanover from Girls Can Grill has taken apple crumble pie to the next level by mixing in beef tallow and BBQ Guys Habanero Honeybee Rub.

How delicious does that sound? A crunchy, sweet, and rich topping adorns the caramelly apples, adding just a hint of honeybee heat.

Beef Tallow Pie Crust Recipe (optional)

  1. Grab your pastry blender and have some fun mixing together the shortening, tallow, flour, sugar, and salt! Just add water, one tablespoon at a time, until your dough is nice and smooth and doesn’t crack when you flatten it out. Hey, you might not actually need all that water!
  2. Form it into a lovely little disc! Just cover it with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge until you’re ready to use it!
  3. Just roll it out between two sheets of wax paper and shape it into your pie tin. Easy peasy!

  1. Start by lining a deep-dish pie pan with your ready-to-go, unbaked piecrust.
  2. Grab a peeler, corer, and slicer, and let’s get those apples sliced and quartered!
  3. Just grab a bowl, toss in those apples, and mix them up with the sugars, corn starch, cinnamon, and cloves. Easy peasy!
  4. Just let them hang out while you whip up the toppings! This will help get rid of any extra moisture from the apples.
  5. Just toss all the crumb topping ingredients into a bowl! Just grab a fork and mix them up until they’re fluffy and crumbly!
  6. Take the apples out of the bowl, but keep that yummy liquid, and then layer them into an unbaked pie shell.
  7. Make sure to pile that crumb topping right up to the edge!
  8. Get your grill cozy and toasty at 375°F, making sure to set up an indirect heat zone! Just flip an empty pie tin upside down and set it on the grill grate. Simply pop a sheet pan on top! Next, just pop the pie onto the sheet pan! This will help prevent the bottom from getting burned. Just lightly cover the pie with some foil and let it bake for about an hour. Take the lid off and let it cook for another 15 to 20 minutes.

Note about the Recipe

If you’re not keen on using beef tallow in the crumble, feel free to go with all butter instead!

Feel free to pop that pie in the freezer after you’ve added the crumble topping, just before it hits the oven! Wrap the pie in two layers of foil and place it in a Ziploc bag to maintain its freshness.

Let it thaw for about 2 hours before you pop it in the oven!
